The current UK Labour government has taken a more restrictive approach to immigration. Proposals include raising the standard qualifying period for settlement (Indefinite Leave to Remain) from 5 to 10 years, raising English language requirements, requiring ‘contribution’ (being in work, not claiming benefits, volunteering), and raising the Skilled Worker salary threshold. Asylum would be temporary, reviewed every 2.5 years, and recipients qualify for settlement only after 20 years.
